You become what you think of most of the time!
– Daymond John
Our Brains think between 60000 to 80000 thoughts per day .That is an average of 2500 to 3000 thoughts per hour .Of these thousands of thoughts, 80%are negative and 90% are exactly the same repetitive thoughts the day before .It is the tendency of the mind to keep focusing on the negative repetitively .These thoughts are mainly about a broken past or a pessimistic future and not about the present. They are full of undue worry, anxiety and stress and not of happiness and peace. Surprisingly, 97 %of our worries are futile and result from an unfounded pessimistic perception. This futile tendency of our minds leads us nowhere and results in more whining and depair. We hardly ever take a step to ascertain these thoughts and shaping them to work for our own advantage .We fail to do a thought check and see the impact of our thought processes on our own lives.
It is very well researched that it is impossible for living organisms to stay the same for a period of time .We are either rising or falling .This law applies to our brains as well. Every single day, out of the 100 billion neurons, every one of our neurons is remaking us and reforming the structure of the entire nervous system. These neurons can be compared to muscle cells .They become stronger with regular stimulation and die down with disuse. Unless we give our minds a direction, our thought process would go haywire and haphazard. Therefore, it becomes very important for us to do a thought check, ascertain the kind of thoughts that are running in our brains, to reform and rewire our brains and make it work to our advantage.
The good news is that our brains come with the immense possibility for growth and change. Many of us do not know how to reprogram the subconscious mind and make it work .Our subconscious is very powerful in nature .It functions more with specific targets and deadlines .Just by letting the mind know, we can create the most desired change in our lives. There are a number of strategies to tap into the vast possibility of our brains.
One of the ways to run our brains effectively is by setting clear GOALS. Goals is a way of crystallizing our thoughts and giving them a structure .They work as a magic wand to achieve what we want to in our lives. Goals are specific close ended quantifiable objectives with a fixed time frame for achieving them. Most people do not set clear goals because of which they tend to alter their life decisions frequently. In order to achieve something we need to give our brains a clear direction so that all our beliefs, values, emotions, capabilities, skills and behaviors fall in alignment .Once we give direction to our brains in the form of specific targets, our brains work towards achieving them and creating suitable situations around us. Goal Setting helps us visualize a better future and literally alters the structure of our brains. Neurotransmitters like dopamine are released in the brain which increases our feel good factor and gives us a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in our lives.
Some of the advantages of setting goals are:
1. Goals are a simple way to decide what we want. They give us a deep structure and act as a manual for our lives. They help us gain a fresh momentum towards achieving our desires.
2.By setting goals whatever instructions we give to our brains , it will start looking for information ,resources and more opportunities and other ways to achieve the want we have identified for ourselves.
3. Once we lock in our desires in our minds, the universe steps in to make our dreams a reality.
4.When we have clear goals ,we feel happier and motivated because every step we take moves us to our ideal future .The happier moments can be lived every moment and with the increased momentum ,every step becomes easier and the entire process faster.
5. Goal Setting enables us to meet our truest and deepest of heart’s desires which seemed to exit in our minds and not in reality. Once the plan is laid out in detail, the goal does not look farfetched as it would have otherwise.
6. Goals help us make the best use of our resources which otherwise would have lied as a waste .Our resources are always limited and setting goals helps us optimally utilize them.
7. Goals provide Measurement and Accountability .We can constantly monitor our effectiveness of our efforts and keep making desired improvements.
Therefore, it is an extremely fruitful exercise to set goals and targets and keep monitoring them on a regular basis.
